We built NiceTips for independent travelers like you.

Kareem Mayan and Andy Volk built NiceTips in the summer of 2009. Having both spent time traveling as digital nomads (see Andy's Gone Living weblog, and Kareem's Digital Nomad site) they came up with the idea after spending time together in Budapest and discussing how what we REALLY needed wasn't guidebooks, it was just tips on the important things that we needed to know to hit the ground running in a new city.

How It Works

We've started with a select group of cities that we know well, and we add more on a regular basis. We added our own favorite tips, and encouraged our friends and you to do the same.

Once you've read a tip, we'd love it if you added your thoughts in the Comments section (for example, did you find a better spot? Or do you agree with the poster?). Vote on it a Yay or Nay depending on whether you agree with it (or not); this helps you distinguish the great tips from the simply good ones.

Need A Hand?

If you'd like some help with our site, visit our pages on Get Satisfaction, where you can ask questions, let us know about bugs or problems with the site, or suggest great new features. Or drop us a line at hello@nicetips.biz - we love hearing from new travelers!

Credit Where Credit Is Due

First off, thanks to YOU for using our site and submitting your travel tips! You guys are what make all of this work. Secondly, big props to Eckermann's Cafe in Budapest, where the majority of our initial work was done (aside from the Budapest flat where we did the rest of our work). Much love to Nathan Smith's 960.gs CSS grid layout system and Ruby on Rails, which helped us take NiceTips from idea to functioning site in just one week.

Love,

Andy and Kareem
